Oliver Heron
Oliver Heron is a pianist, improviser and composer based in London. He originally studied jazz at Guildhall but later gravitated towards experimental music, and studied contemporary composition with Laurence Crane and Bára Gísladóttir.
His performance practice has developed around exploiting the extended piano’s expressive and psychoacoustic potentials, striving for a virtuosic control of sound and timbre akin to percussionists and electronic musicians. His recent setup involves both detailed preparation, extended application (mallets and small percussion), traditional playing, and applying a surface transducer on the piano soundboard, making all electronics - whether samples or xenharmonic synth patches - deeply embedded within the natural acoustic experience of the piano.
Musically, his musical interests are broad, but aesthetically gravitates towards an exploration of economy of material, cyclic forms and web-like interactive ensemble structures. He has written pieces for the Druskomanija contemporary music festival in Lithuania, Ensemble Taller Sonoro in Spain, and works within a variety of free improvising, experimental and jazz groups.
